WHEN LOCKS DON'T WORK

WHEN LOCKS DON’T WORK

Credit Union Management, May 2007 by Ochalla, Bryan

Dread being contacted about compromised cards? A recent fraud scare has taught these CDs how to rid themselves of some of the worry and prepare for future incidents.

Receiving fraud alerts from Visa isn’t unusual for CUES member Georgette Munoz, CEO of Hayward, Calif.-based Bay Cities Credit Union (www. baycities.org).

Typically, the communiques (called CAMS alerts, as they come from the card giant’s Compromised Account Management System) mention a handful of possibly compromised accounts.

It’s easy to understand, then, why Munoz was taken aback when she read an alert on her desk in mid-January, stating that someone had hacked the computers of TJX, operators of discount chains T.J. Maxx and Marshalls, putting millions of accounts at risk.

At Bay Cities CU alone, more than 500 cards were put into question (compared to 17 the last time a data breach occurred). Considering the CU has just $65 million in assets and about 18,000 members, this constituted an attack of substantial proportions. “It was a big deal for us,” Munoz says.

It was a big deal for other CUs, too. At $35 million First Education Federal Credit Union (www.firsted fcu.com) in Cheyenne, Wyo., about 450 cards were affected by the breach. Four hundred eighty cards were compromised at Healthcare Employees Federal Credit Union (www.befcu.com) in Princeton, N.J.

“We routinely receive alerts on individual members’ compromised cards through various fraud alert programs for both our Visa credit and debit card programs,” says John Dawidowski, CEO of Healthcare EFCU and a CUES member. “This was the first one in which a breach affected more than one member.”

James Yates, president/CEO of First Education FCU, which has just over 7,000 members, says he regularly receives Visa alerts as well, though typically just two or three cards are involved. “So this was a major event for us,” says Yates, a CUES member.

At $2.8 billion ESL Federal Credit Union (www. esl.org), which has more than 280,000 members, about 20,000 cardholders were impacted by the compromise

Dry flaky skin is

Dry flaky skin is popularly referred to as ringworm infection and does not occur due to problems with kidney or lungs. Also, this is different from diseases like eczema and psoriasis.

When the skin is dry to the point of flakiness, this might sometimes lead to cracking, chapping, and a tightened feel of the skin. This tends to be itchy and painful and sometimes even leads to wounds due to excessive scratching.

Dry flaky skin can be genetic. Also, it does not depend on the type of skin but rather on the amount of moisture being retained by the body. People suffering from this ailment must strictly avoid chemicals and harsh cosmetics. Mild, clear body wash can be used.

Moisturizers can be used for temporary relief as they tend to retain the moisture in the body. However, these must be used regularly to avoid repetition of the dry skin. It must be understood that the creams and moisturizers available in the market do not provide a long-term solution to this problem.

Dry Skin provides detailed information about dry skin, dry skin care, and more.

Rethinking dream homes on the Shore

0 Comments | Capital, Aug 31, 2008

Eric Bentley doesn’t go home after work these days. Instead of braving the Bay Bridge to get back to his house on Kent Island, he’s been staying at his mother-in-law’s in Silver Spring on weeknights.

And one day last week, he started browsing the Internet for real estate listings in Anne Arundel County. He’s considering selling or renting out his Stevensville home, a decision he said is “killing me.”

“That’s where I wanted to raise my family,” Mr. Bentley said Friday.

He bought the small house 12 years ago, when he was single. He’s now married with three children, the oldest one 6 and the youngest 5 months. He’s spent countless hours on the home, adding a sunroom, a deck and a new roof and redoing about every room.

“I don’t want to move,” Mr. Bentley said. “I wish I could pick my house up and put it someplace else – someplace on the western shore – until this goes away.

“But that’s the thing. I’m not sure it’s ever going to go away.”

“This,” of course, is the repair work, newly discovered corrosion and ever-increasing traffic making a commute across the Bay Bridge a nightmare.

Since your body

Since your body uses more sugar while exercising and makes you more sensitive to insulin, there is a risk of blood sugar becoming too low and causing hypoglycemia.

When exercising it is important to let others know that you are diabetic. They should be informed what to do in case of hypoglycemia. You should always carry candy or fruit juice to treat low blood sugar levels should they occur. During and after exercise sessions, you should pay close attention to how you feel since rapid heart beat, increased sweating, feeling shaky, or hunger can signal that your blood sugar levels are becoming too low.

Exercise is a critical part of diabetic management and treatment. Exercise helps blood sugar control when the muscles use more glucose and the body become more sensitive to insulin. Exercise also helps to prevent and minimize common diabetic complications including heart problems, high blood pressure and circulatory deficiencies. All diabetics should include a regular exercise program as part of their overall management plan.

It can help

It can help determine what form of sleep apnea you are suffering from, how severe a case it is, and what may be causing it.

There are a number of treatments that may be tried in order to find the best one for your particular situation. Different treatments will work for different people, often depending on their specific symptoms and how severe they are.

Treatment for sleep apnea can reduce and in many cases completely get rid of snoring which is one of the most common symptoms. Improving the snoring problem will help to decrease the number of apneic events over the course of a night, giving you a more restful sleep.

Treating sleep apnea will also have a positive effect during the day.

No one else cares. And

No one else cares. And they tune you out.

The opposite of love is not hate. It?s indifference.

Is your advertising suffering from indifference? If you?re not selling benefits that someone will drool over (the equivalent of a tender, juicy bar-B-Q chicken fillet sandwich), you?re wasting your ad money.

And if your ads only appeal to those people who don?t make a difference to your bottom line (i.e., cats), maybe it?s time you re-adjusted your advertising focus.

Here are the two questions you must answer: What do your potential customers crave? And how is that craving satisfied by you?

Let me repeat that, because it?s that important.

What do your potential customers crave?

And how is that craving satisfied by you?

Write that down somewhere. Bring it to your next team briefing or sales meeting, and ask everyone to answer these two questions, either on a sheet of paper or in a group discussion forum. Focus your energies on them, and listen to what the group is saying.

As homeowner is kept busy, thieves clean house

0 Comments | Patriot Ledger, The; Quincy, Mass., Jul 28, 2010 | by John P. Kelly

Braintree

Ronald Vinton realized that not locking the front door was “idiotic” only after three men sped off in a gray pickup truck with his mother’s jewelry and $3,000.

The daytime heist at Vinton’s Liberty Street home on Monday was the fourth in Braintree in less than two months in which a burglary crew lured a homeowner outside to distract him as the house was pillaged for valuables.

“This is definitely an organized group,” Deputy Chief Russell Jenkins of the Braintree Police Department said. Despite variations in the descriptions of suspects and getaway vehicles, police believe the scams are the work a single band of criminals, Jenkins said.

The first was in early June. Then, two weeks ago, homeowners on Glenrose Avenue and Addison Street reported similar scenarios within hours of each other. Suspects in one case were white men in their 20s; the others were described as Hispanic.

In the first case, a man told police he found jewelry missing after a stranger asked him to step outside to discuss a utility pole in need of replacement. In the second, police believe a woman arrived home and startled the burglars while her husband was outside looking at trees a neighbor supposedly hired the faux contractor to remove.

Vinton, 66, said he had just returned from an early afternoon trip to the grocery store on Monday when there was a knock on the door. An unshaven man in his late 30s or early 40s identified himself as a contractor who installed his neighbor’s new swimming pool and asked if he could discuss cutting down trees in Vinton’s back yard.

For 15 minutes, Vinton said, the man wound the conversation from landscaping to building a fence to Italian food. A few times he spoke into a two-way radio in a foreign language.

“It sounded like Italian,” Vinton said. “I got suspicious.”

But the gig was soon up.

A van that delivers meals to Vinton pulled up, blocking the pickup truck, and the imposter “took off like a jackrabbit” for the driveway, Vinton said. Two other men jumped in and the delivery driver, unaware that anything was amiss, moved the van as the getaway proceeded.

The driver later recalled that the truck had Maine license plates.

Inside, rooms had been ransacked and cash had been swiped from a locked antique dresser. A dresser drawer had been pried open
